With an investment of over €1,475,000, the aim of the NEWLIGHT project is to develop a textile system that can change light and colour for indoors and outdoors. It was funded by €965,000 from the European Regional Development Fund through the National Strategic Reference Framework (QREN), as part of the Competitiveness Operational Factors Programme. 
The project, which is to end in March 2013, involves the developer Têxteis Penedo, S.A., and the co-developers Castros - Iluminações Festivas, S.A., CeNTI – Centro de Nanotecnologia e Materiais Técnicos, Funcionais e Inteligentes, and Citeve – Centro Tecnológico das Indústrias Têxteis e do Vestuário de Portugal.
